High-Performing Teams Start with Quality Relationships

The bottom line? High-performing teams need quality relationships and meaningful team interactions.

It sounds simple. But in busy workplaces, where people are juggling priorities, navigating change and working across different roles and perspectives, taking the time to really understand how we work with one another can easily fall down the list.

Yet the quality of our relationships has a very real impact on how effectively we communicate, collaborate and achieve outcomes together.

I recently had the absolute joy of facilitating an Insights Discovery® workshop with newer members of the International Office at Waipapa Taumata Rau, University of Auckland.

It was a wonderful opportunity for the team to step away from the day-to-day and focus on something fundamental to team performance: understanding themselves and each other.

Understanding difference creates stronger connections

Every team brings together different personalities, preferences, experiences and ways of working.

Some people naturally think out loud. Others prefer time to reflect.

Some thrive on pace and action. Others want to understand the detail before moving forward.

Some naturally focus on people and relationships, while others may be more strongly driven by tasks, outcomes or possibilities.

None of these approaches is inherently better than another. The opportunity comes from recognising and valuing those differences — and learning how to adapt the way we connect and communicate with others.

During the workshop, the team explored their diverse work styles and communication preferences, while considering how they could best connect and work together.

That awareness can make a significant difference.

From self-awareness to team effectiveness

Greater self-awareness helps us understand not only our own preferences and strengths, but also how our behaviour might be experienced by someone else.

Understanding others adds another important layer.

Rather than expecting colleagues to think, communicate or respond as we do, we can become more intentional about how we engage with them.

For teams, this can mean:

  • communicating in ways that work for different people
  • recognising and drawing on individual and collective strengths
  • creating more inclusive team interactions
  • reducing misunderstanding and unnecessary friction
  • building stronger working relationships
  • collaborating more effectively towards shared outcomes.

Over time, these everyday interactions help create the trust, connection and understanding that underpin high-performing teams.

Making meaningful team interactions intentional

Quality relationships don’t simply happen because talented people have been brought together in the same team.

They need attention.

Creating space for teams to understand one another, talk openly about how they work and recognise the value of different perspectives helps turn a group of individuals into a genuinely connected team.

Insights Discovery® provides a simple and memorable framework to support these conversations. It helps people better understand themselves and others and provides a shared language teams can continue to use long after a workshop has finished.

And that’s where the real value lies: not simply in the insight itself, but in what people choose to do differently because of it.

Because when people understand each other better, they can work better together.

It was a real pleasure working with the International Office team at Waipapa Taumata Rau, University of Auckland, and I wish everyone the very best as they continue to strengthen their connections and ways of working together.
