Insights Discovery: How Self-Awareness Helps Teams Work Better Together

What changes when people understand themselves — and each other — a little better?

Insights Discovery helps people build greater self-awareness and understand how their preferences can influence the way they communicate, make decisions and work with others.

Recently, I had the pleasure of exploring exactly this with a fantastic PlaceMakers team.

There was plenty of energy in the room. There was also some serious fun, serious insight and some great conversations along the way!

Self-awareness is a powerful starting point

We all have natural preferences in the way we work.

We communicate differently.

We process information differently.

We make decisions differently.

And when we’re under pressure, those differences can become even more visible.

None of these preferences are inherently right or wrong.

However, understanding them can give us valuable insight into ourselves and the people around us.

During an Insights Discovery session, some of the questions we explore include:

  • How do I naturally communicate?
  • What might I need to adapt when communicating with others?
  • How do I tend to make decisions?
  • What happens to my behaviour when I’m under pressure?
  • How might I adapt the way I show up to build stronger connections?

These can be simple questions.

But the conversations they create can be incredibly valuable.

Self-awareness gives us greater choice

Without self-awareness, it’s easy to simply react.

  • We communicate in the way that feels natural to us.
  • We make decisions using our preferred approach.
  • And under pressure, we can fall back on familiar patterns of behaviour.
  • Greater self-awareness creates another option.

It gives us the opportunity to pause and choose how we respond.

We can ask:

What does this person or situation need from me right now?

That small shift can make a significant difference.

Instead of simply responding in the way that feels most natural, we can choose an approach that is more likely to create a positive outcome.

For ourselves.

For our colleagues.

For our customers.

And for the business.

Understanding difference helps teams work better together

Self-awareness is only one part of the picture.

Insights Discovery also helps people better understand the preferences of others.

That can change the way differences are experienced within a team.

Instead of thinking:

Why do they always need so much detail?

We might start asking:

What information do they need to feel confident moving forward?

Instead of:

Why don’t they just get to the point?

We might recognise that someone needs conversation and connection before reaching a decision.

Instead of seeing a different approach as frustrating, we can become more curious about it.

That curiosity matters.

Because when differences are easier to understand, they can also become easier to appreciate.

Adaptability doesn’t mean changing who you are

Sometimes the idea of adapting our style can feel uncomfortable.

Does it mean becoming someone else?

Not at all.

The goal isn’t to change your personality.

It’s to develop greater flexibility in how you use your natural strengths.

For example, you may naturally communicate with energy and enthusiasm. But another person may need more detail and time to reflect.

Adapting doesn’t mean losing your enthusiasm.

It simply means recognising what will help the other person engage with you more effectively.

That’s an important capability for both teams and leaders.

A shared language can change everyday conversations

One of the strengths of Insights Discovery is that it gives teams a simple, memorable shared language.

  • That language can make conversations about difference easier.
  • People can talk more openly about what they need.
  • Communication can become more intentional.
  • Relationships can strengthen.
  • Teams can become more inclusive of different styles and perspectives.
  • And people become better equipped to adapt when circumstances change.

The framework isn’t valuable because people learn something interesting about themselves during a workshop.

Its real value comes from what happens afterwards.

What do we do differently because we understand each other better?

From insight to better teamwork

The PlaceMakers team brought fantastic energy and openness to the session.

But importantly, they also invested time in understanding how they could work better together.

Because that’s ultimately where the value sits.

Greater self-awareness helps us understand our impact.

Understanding others helps us appreciate difference.

Adaptability helps us respond more intentionally.

And a shared language gives teams a practical way to keep those conversations going.

Together, those things can create stronger relationships and better-performing teams.

What could your team unlock if people understood themselves — and each other — better?
