Does Mindset Matter? More Than We Might Think

How would you describe the mindset in your team or organisation?

It’s a question worth thinking about.

We can have a clear strategy. We can have the Plan on a Page. We can establish priorities, measures and expectations that give people direction and clarity.

But what happens next is influenced by something much more human.

The attitudes and mindsets people bring to work.

These influence how we think, how we behave, how we interact with others and, ultimately, what we are able to achieve together.

What mindset shows up in your organisation?

Think about the everyday interactions happening across your team.

When someone has a different point of view, are people curious or defensive?

When something goes wrong, do people speak openly or take cover?

When a challenge emerges, do people compete to protect their own interests or collaborate around a shared outcome?

Different mindsets create very different experiences.

An authentic mindset allows people to share thoughts and feelings openly.

A fearful mindset can cause people to retreat when things become difficult.

A collaborative mindset encourages people to focus on shared goals and what can be achieved together.

A competitive mindset can create an environment where situations are viewed through the lens of winners and losers.

None of this sits neatly on an organisational chart or strategic plan.

But we see its impact every day.

Mindset shapes behaviour

Culture isn’t created simply by defining organisational values or describing the behaviours we’d like to see.

It is shaped through thousands of everyday interactions.

How people respond when they’re challenged.

Whether ideas are welcomed.

How leaders react when someone makes a mistake.

Whether people feel comfortable raising concerns.

Whether teams share information and support each other or protect their own territory.

Mindset sits beneath many of these behaviours.

That’s why changing what people do sometimes requires us to explore how people think first.

What would you like to shift?

Rather than trying to label the culture as good or bad, some useful questions to explore with your team might be:

  • What attitudes do we see playing out in how people think, feel and behave?
  • Which of these help us perform at our best?
  • Which might be getting in our way?
  • What mindset would enable us to achieve what we want to achieve together?

And perhaps most importantly:

  • What would we need to do differently to create it?

I’ve been using Culture Science Facilitation Cards with clients to help create these conversations, including exploring mindsets centred around growth and collaboration.

The value isn’t simply in identifying a desired mindset.

It’s in helping people understand what that mindset looks and feels like in practice — and what needs to change to bring it to life.

Because strategy can give people direction.

Mindset can determine how successfully we get there together.
