What would organisations do without great leaders?
At their best, leaders create the conditions for people to thrive. They bring clarity where there is ambiguity, energy where there is fatigue, and connection where there is distance. They don’t just deliver results — they shape experiences.
In our work with teams across a range of organisations, we consistently hear similar themes about what people value most from their leaders. People want clarity about the future and what’s expected of them. They want autonomy and the opportunity to make a meaningful contribution. They want to feel part of something — to belong, to grow, and to achieve.
At the heart of all of this is how people feel at work.
When people feel clear, connected, valued, and inspired, they are far more likely to be engaged and bring their best. And while many factors influence this, leadership plays a defining role in shaping that everyday experience.
So, the question becomes: what should leaders focus on — and how do they need to show up?
The “What”: Where Great Leaders Focus Their Attention
Through listening to teams and working alongside leaders, we’ve identified seven core areas that matter most. These aren’t theoretical — they reflect the practical, everyday actions that shape a team’s experience.
- Share the Vision – Great leaders bring direction to life. They are clear about where the organisation is heading and why it matters. They connect individual roles to the bigger picture and communicate consistently to inspire action.
- Create the Culture – Culture isn’t accidental — it’s created. Leaders shape environments where people feel safe, engaged, and proud to be part of the team. They model the behaviours they expect and set the tone for how people show up.
- Champion Change – Change is constant. Strong leaders stay curious about what can be improved, prepare their teams for what’s ahead, and involve people in the journey so change feels done with them, not to them.
- Lead the Team – Great leadership is personal. It’s about knowing your people — their strengths, motivations, and aspirations — and bringing out the best in the collective. Alignment on goals and ways of working creates momentum.
- Build Relationships – Trust sits at the centre of high-performing teams. Leaders build it through everyday interactions — by listening, collaborating, and being open to challenge.
- Grow People – People want to develop, and leaders play a critical role in that growth. Through feedback, coaching, and creating opportunities, leaders help individuals and teams expand their capability and confidence.
- Achieve Results – Ultimately, leadership is about outcomes. Great leaders turn plans into action, create clarity around ownership, encourage innovation, and celebrate progress along the way.
The “How”: How Great Leaders Show Up
While what leaders focus on is important, it’s how they show up that brings it to life.
The leaders who have the greatest impact consistently demonstrate a set of mindsets and behaviours that shape how their actions are experienced by others:
- Purposeful – Clear on what matters most and intentional in their actions
- Authentic – Genuine, consistent, and human in how they lead
- Courageous – Willing to have the hard conversations and make difficult decisions
- Curious – Open to learning, listening, and seeing different perspectives
- Adaptable – Able to respond and adjust in a changing environment
- Empowering – Creating space for others to contribute, decide, and grow
- Accountable – Taking ownership and following through on commitments
These behaviours are not “nice to have” — they are what enable the seven focus areas to land in a meaningful and sustainable way.
Bringing It All Together
Leadership isn’t about doing everything — it’s about focusing on what matters most and showing up in a way that enables others to succeed.
When leaders are clear on both the what and the how, they create environments where people feel connected, capable, and motivated to contribute. And that’s where real performance – and real fulfilment – begins.
